The Circuit: October 2019

Do you ever feel as if you need a new supercomputer — not to conduct cutting-edge research for the betterment of humanity but rather to keep track of (or, better still, make sense of) the myriad nonscientific developments that are continually reshaping academic engineering and other STEM disciplines?

In response to a seemingly unending barrage of breakthroughs in science and technology, universities are rolling out courses and degree programs that would have drawn blank stares even a decade ago. Classroom buildings that only recently seemed perfectly adequate are giving way to collaboration-promoting, entrepreneurship-supporting “innovation laboratories” bearing the names of generous benefactors, many of whom rode the tech boom to once-unimaginable wealth — and into the warm embrace of development officers from coast to coast.

Indeed, the frenzied competition for transformative donations and federal research grants is matched only by the intercollegiate battle for headline-grabbing talent. The upshot: Top administrators and high-profile faculty members are ping-ponging through American higher education at a velocity that might have forced Albert Einstein to reconsider his theory of relativity. What's more, as you well know, many of these tech-savvy scholars aren’t simply moving from one STEM program to another; they’re ascending to the uppermost reaches of the academy’s C-suite, lured by governing boards eager to tap their unique problem-solving skills.

We, of course, can’t provide you with a new supercomputer, but we can make it easier to stay abreast of developments in the STEM fields — who’s in and who’s out, who’s cutting ribbons and who’s cutting positions, who’s admitting students and who’s admitting mistakes.

Attached is the latest edition of The Circuit, Harris Search Associates’ monthly newsletter for those who work in and around academic engineering and other STEM disciplines. As you’ll see, it features a roundup of pertinent news headlines, a breakdown of notable personnel moves, and a curated assortment of timely, relevant insights from individuals at the forefront of innovation and discovery.
