Harris Search Associates has recruited Dr. Wayne Watkins as Executive Director of the Walter Scott Jr. Scholars Program at the University of Nebraska Omaha. He will assume the role at UNO on August 1, 2019.

Reporting to Vice Chancellor for Student Success, the Executive Director (ED) leads and coordinates a program of co-curricular activities and experiences for Scott Scholars that integrate with and enrich the undergraduate education of accomplished students enrolled in STEM-related degree programs on campuses of the University. Established in 1997, the Scott Scholars program attracts and retains outstanding high-school graduates from Nebraska to enroll in and complete degrees in fields that are offered by the University and are of critical importance to the vitality and quality of life in the state and its communities. Ultimately, the goal is to prepare Scott Scholars for productive careers and engaged service as citizens of Nebraska. This ED serves as a dynamic, visionary leader to advance the national reputation of the program, engage alumni, and the brightest minds of the state in the development of the next generation of STEM leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs at an exciting time in the continued growth of the region.
Dr. Wayne H. Watkins BSME, MBA, JD, is an experienced leader in technology commercialization having facilitated and led in the creation, strategy development, leadership development, financing, and growth of many new and emerging technology-based companies. Wayne has served 29 years in higher education focused on technology development and commercialization as well as bridging the academic, private business and governmental sectors. He previously served as Associate Vice President for Research at The University of Akron and Vice President of the University of Akron Research Foundation. In addition, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Law and Adjunct Professor of Business, teaching courses in intellectual property, entrepreneurial studies, management of innovation and business policy courses. He also served as Director Technology Commercialization, Director Research and Technology Park, and Adjunct Professor of Management at Utah State University.
Wayne also has significant private sector business. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Honeyville Inc., a 400 employee food ingredients manufacturer and distributor in Arizona, California, and Utah. He was Vice President and Corporate Counsel for the Hanover Companies. He is an owner and serves as board chair of Frontier Scientific Inc. and of Echelon Biosciences Inc., both technology-based and university spin-out enterprises. He has served and continues to serve on multiple boards of directors.
