Howard University selects Harris Search Associates to lead the search for Deputy Chief Financial Officer

Howard University has selected Harris Search Associates to lead the search for its Deputy Chief Financial Officer (CFO).  A newly created position, and reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, the Deputy CFO will be expected to help the University to achieve and maintain financial stability, advance the University's mission and its academic priorities, and enable the University to conduct itself as a prudent steward for the resources entrusted to it by students and their families, donors, grantors, and other resource-providers for the benefit of the University's student body, faculty, staff, alumni and general community.

The Deputy CFO will serve as the representative of the Chief Financial Officer and will provide University-wide leadership and direction to University staff and to internal and external constituencies with respect to matters of financial administration and overall University policy.

Both within the Office of the CFO and as a part of broader cross-functional University teams, the Deputy CFO will be responsible for developing and leading new initiatives and projects intended to reduce operating expenses, increase and diversify revenue streams, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the University, 

The Deputy CFO will be responsible for carrying out complex financial and operational analyses, policy reviews, and investigations, and will lead and participate in the management of consultants and other University business partners in order to ensure the efficient operation of the University and its affiliates and subsidiaries, demonstrating sound decision-making on complex business issues. 

The Deputy CFO will be responsible for the creation, revision, and administration of accountable, consistent, prudent and transparent University financial policies, practices and procedures.

The Deputy CFO will help develop and implement methods and strategies to improve business processes and business practices within the offices that report to the Chief Financial Officer and throughout the University. The Deputy CFO will be responsible for taking actions and making decisions that will have a material financial impact on the University. 

The Deputy CFO will assist the Chief Financial Officer and the other University Executive Team members in ensuring that the financial operations of the University are carried out in accordance with all University policies, sound financial principles, and all relevant governmental laws, regulations, and procedures.

The desired candidate for this position will have a thorough understanding of GAAP and relevant FASB pronouncements, particularly with respect to nonprofit institutions and higher education. 

The desired candidate will possess the interpersonal skills and leadership style required to promote positive change, motivate peers and subordinates, advance and encourage ethical conduct at all times and help infuse a sense of urgency and accountability across the organization.

The desired candidate will have the demonstrated ability to serve as a leader who can identify and nurture talent, build and lead teams, develop individuals' talents and abilities, promote process improvement, and work effectively across a complex and multi-layered organization. 

Additionally, the desired candidate will demonstrate integrity and strong character, possess high energy, be willing and able to set and achieve high standards, be able to measure and monitor results, be able to take corrective action when necessary, and possess the ability to make difficult decisions. 

The desired candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills for use in interactions with internal constituencies at all levels of the organization as well as with outside partners, colleagues, and collaborators.

Established in 1867, chartered and incorporated by an Act of the United States Congress, Howard University is a federally chartered, private, coeducational, nonsectarian, historically black university located in Washington, D.C.  Founded as a University for the education of youth in the liberal arts and sciences, Howard is Carnegie classified as a high research activity.  The University consists of 13 schools and colleges: Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences, Business, Communications, Education, Law, Divinity, Social Work, Arts and Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  Within these divisions, students choose from 58 degree programs and 181 majors.
